A mechanical issue was the cause.
The fuel spill occurred due to a mechanical issue with a diesel pump for an on-site backup generator. The pump failed to shut off overnight, causing the spill.
Maintenance personnel discovered the issue the following morning and shut off the pump. By then, 700 gallons had already been released. Haleakala is home to a number of telescope observatories and military facilities, including the Maui Space Surveillance Complex. The Hawaii Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency were notified, and an update is expected next week.
