Even a best-case scenario can't stop it.
Melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet cannot be stopped Humans have ‘lost control’ of melting in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, leading to unavoidable sea level rise and communities having to abandon their homes, scientists say. Even if governments work together to limit global warming to 1.5C – a best-case scenario – melting will continue to accelerate this century, at a rate three times faster than during the 20th Century.
Northern Europe, Japan and the US are all predicted to experience higher than average sea level rise, while some low-lying island nations could be lost completely. In addition, higher sea levels leave coastal regions more vulnerable to storm surges – with a warming atmosphere contributing to more frequent and more severe storms.
