The partial human remains discovered Wednesday in a Florida nature reserve in the search for Brian Laundrie were bones, a spokesperson for the North Port Police Department told Forbes, though the medical examiner has yet to identify who they belong to
The bones were found in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Fla., near a backpack and notebook that belonged to Laundrie, the missing fiancé of Gabby Petito and the only person of interest identified by authorities in her murder, according to the Tampa FBI.
Josh Taylor, the public information officer for the city of North Port, said he could not comment on when the medical examiner will announce the identity of the remains.Local and federal agents had been searching the Carlton Reserve, which is attached to the Myakkahatchee Creek, for about one month for Laundrie, who was last seen by his parents in mid-September. The bones and belongings were discovered in an area that had previously been underwater.
