“I do remember him making a terrible fuss about the dance,” Firth said, Britishly. Curtis, meanwhile, recalled that Grant kept coming up with excuses to delay filming the scene, doing everything from feigning ankle injuries to claiming he needed to rehearse lines. He delayed so frequently that the scene wasn’t shot until the final day of production. “Imagine you’re a grumpy 40-year-old Englishman, it’s 7 o’clock in the morning and you’re stone-cold sober…it’s absolute hell,” Grant recalled.
“A not nice memory is mainly Hugh and the dancing. He was HUGELY [DB’s emphasis] grumpy about it,” Curtis recalled. “He was so wanting his bit not to be fake; he wanted to feel as though he could be prime minister. Whenever I said, ‘Do it a bit sweeter’ or ‘do it a bit more charming,’ he thought he was being tricked.
