Huge response seen near the River Irwell overnight, emergency services were actually searching the canal nearby
Reports of a possible person in the water sparked a huge emergency response near the River Irwell on Sunday night. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Woden Street in Salford - across the river from Pamona Wharf and St George's Island - just before midnight.
Photos from the scene show around a dozen emergency vehicles in attendance. It is understood they were searching the Bridgewater Canal near to Waterways Avenue, which is on the other side of the island from the river. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue S ervice confirmed that no casualty was found following the search. They said in a statement: “At 11.55pm on Sunday, September 4, two fire engines from Salford fire station along with the water incident unit and technical rescue unit attended Woden Street, Salford following reports that a person may be in the water.
It is understood the police helicopter was also drafted in to help with the search, as well as a specialist drone.
