American goldfinches have been crowding around bird feeders this month but are barely recognizable for lack of their golden yellow plumage.

By March and April, American goldfinch males will begin showing lemon-yellow bodies and coal-black foreheads.

Nonbreeding females look like males, except for having duller plumage, not that it’s readily noticeable. Both sexes have ink-black wings with pale wingbars and black tails. • Nyjer seed also attracts the birds but requires a mesh nyjer seed stocking or nyjer seed tube feeder. Replace nyjer seed frequently because it quickly becomes rancid.

By mid-February, American goldfinches will gradually molt body feathers and wing coverings but not flight feathers. By late March or April, males will begin showing lemon-yellow bodies and coal-black foreheads. Females will take on a brownish-yellow cast contrasting with a greenish-yellow color on the heads.
