And the lack of schooling isn't a temporary problem for many. In Ukraine, access to schooling has been impacted over the course of the years-long conflict that escalated last month, Fricker says. “Women and girls, especially those displaced and traveling on their own, are particularly exposed… to gender-based violence. When girls are not in school, they are extremely vulnerable to other threats,” Fricker says. "They are also far less likely than boys to go back [to school] again, as they often have to take on additional responsibilities to support their mothers – most of whom are now alone as single parents.
