How to engage kids and build their knowledge when schools are closed:
A few caveats: It’s unrealistic to expect most kids—especially younger ones—to sit in front of a screen for seven hours a day and educate themselves. Even when technology is used in classrooms, kids; computers can’t provide the motivation and support that humans can. So parents or other adults will need to be involved to some extent.
Another consideration is how much relevant background knowledge your child will bring to a topic, which may be more important than the grade level attached to the material. If the text is discussing the War of 1812, for example—one of the topics covered by CKLA in second grade—and your child hasn’t yet learned about the American Revolution, that’s something to bear in mind.
