Ruggs required a different approach. Because of his natural speed, they tried a couple of approaches, including the above. What seemed to work with his quick turnover was getting his foot to hit the ground faster than most and repeat it—so smaller steps to start instead of big steps. The goal here was to build momentum in those steps, get upright, and get to top speed sooner.
“When a guy does something well, you don’t want to get paralysis from analysis,” Murphy said. “If he’s fast, don’t put things in his head.”
