Like many other cities in recent weeks, Richmond, Virginia, has outlined plans to remove monuments to southern Civil War generals. Some Black residents are reclaiming the space while they wait for the statues to topple.
described it, “The really cool thing about people contextualizing monuments is that those monuments’ bases are bringing out the most diverse group of Richmonders we have ever seen.“Richmond is still segregated through our social spaces, our restaurants, our churches, of course, our schools, our neighborhoods,” she added. “But right now, that Robert E. Lee monument that is contextualized has people from all ages, all backgrounds, all diversity of thought out there, sitting in the grass together.
“We are out there, day and night,” Allen said, thanking the bar where she works for allowing her the time to do it. “You just walk out there and there’s so much love and hope pouring in from all walks of people. It’s just beautiful. That’s what keeps fueling us day after day to keep going back out there and to make sure our warriors have the fuel that they need to start their day.”
