The Continental series was first announced in 2017 after Chad Stahelski - director of all four John Wick movies - and writer Derek Kolstad began thinking of ways to expand the universe.
As is evident from the title of the show, The Continental is centered on the hotel of the same name from the John Wick films. In John Wick, The Continental is a branch of hotels across the world that act as safe havens for those in John's line of work which provide accommodation, weaponry, clothing, and other services for hitmen in the John Wick universe.
The Continental, therefore, is a prequel to John Wick. The series highlights the rise of Winston in the New York underworld to become the manager of the eponymous hotel. As such, the series includes several of the older characters featured in the John Wick films, with Winston being one and another being Charon, the concierge of the John Wick series played by the late Lance Reddick.
The Continental Further Explores The Hotel's Function In The John Wick Universe's Criminal Underworld Aside from Winston's involvement in The Continental, the series also explores the function of the titular establishment within the John Wick universe.
More of the mythology, lore, and rules of the High Table - the governing body of John Wick's criminal empire - is outlined in The Continental. This extends to the New York hotel itself, with the establishment being featured in much more detail than the John Wick movies ever provided.
