Godiva says the current protest movement against police violence has contributed significantly to the increase in resources and support, though she emphasizes that their message should be nothing new. “It’s something we’ve always been saying nonstop,” Godiva says. “Stop killing us.”
That message does seem to be spreading more quickly right now, and while more people are supporting Black trans organizations, Godiva says it’s still not enough to make radical change happen.
The BTTF team has also been participating in the movement to defund the police through sponsoring rides home from rallies and protests. Godiva hopes that eventually, BTTF can provide fellowships for Black trans women to travel for pleasure and not for reasons of safety. Her more immediate goals, however, are to expand into more states and also internationally.
