MPs are unlikely to approve the numerous amendments to the Rwanda legislation made by peers

The Government’s hopes of getting deportation flights to Rwanda taking off this spring could be dashed this week as MPs vote on a series of amendments to the legislation made by the House of Lords.

If peers and MPs are unable to reach an agreement this week, the date for when the Safety of Rwanda Bill can become law will be further pushed back, putting Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s hopes of getting flights to Rwanda off the ground by the autumn in jeopardy.

But the Lords can send fresh amendments back if MPs reject them in a process known as parliamentary ping-pong., went through three such ping-pongs in 2023 before it was passed into law. Any debate on future changes from peers will be debated “forthwith”, meaning MPs can begin debating them without having to give a day’s notice, and two hours will be allocated for the next round of debate, with one hour earmarked for all future rounds.
