Red Dragon is the third entry in the Hannibal Lecter movie franchise, but where exactly does it fit in the convoluted timeline of the series?
It's technically the third film in the franchise, so does Hannibal Lecter outing Red Dragon fit into the series timeline? Despite the huge success of The Silence Of The Lambs - including winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress - it once seemed there would be no sequels. Production on any follow-up was delayed until author Thomas Harris completed his sequel novel, Hannibal.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It was something of a polarizing novel too, with Jodie Foster even turning down the Hannibal movie. At the very least, it convinced Anthony Hopkins to return to the role of Lecter, with the actor being a hammy delight. After years of waiting the sequel reinvigorated the series, with two more movies following soon after.
Red Dragon Is A Prequel To Silence Of The Lambs Instead, Red Dragon is a prequel to both Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal. The film is actually the second adaptation of Harris' Red Dragon novel, which had previously been made into a Michael Mann thriller called Manhunter in 1986. That film had no connections to Silence Of The Lambs, however.
The Silence Of The Lambs itself is set in 1990, where Lecter helps FBI trainee Clarice Starling catch serial killer Buffalo Bill . Hannibal is set a decade later in 2000 when Lecter and Starling's cross paths once again. Just to add to the illogical timeline puzzle of the series, 2007's Hannibal Rising is a prequel set decades before the other prequel Red Dragon.
Red Dragon Leads Straight Into Silence Of The Lambs It's not the most seamless of connections, but the ending of Red Dragon leads directly into Silence Of The Lambs. After Will and his family have survived one last attack by The Tooth Fairy , Graham reads a letter from Lecter wishing him well after he recovered from his wounds. The final scene has sanitarium director Chilton tell Hannibal a young FBI agent wants to speak to him, with Lecter asking for her name.
