Americans can handle both truth and uncertainty about COVID-19. Public health officials should trust us with both.

Part of what makes the Omicron variant challenging is the rapidly evolving — and sometimes contradictory — advice and recommendations from public health authorities. And this is nothing new; rather it has been a pattern since the pandemic began in 2020.

A friend recently pointed me towards this recent excellent article by Dr. Peter Sandman for the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy on “ .” The whole article is worth reading, but I wanted to highlight a few points that resonated with me and that deserve wider circulation.Dr. Sandman noted that throughout the pandemic, too many public health officials issued pronouncements without adequately conveying the lack of certainty.
