As fire burst into the cockpit, Earnhardt, wind knocked out of him, was motionless for a moment before climbing out and collapsing on the track surface. He recounted the story on his“I remember moving, like going to lean forward and trying to climb out of the car, and something grabbed me under the armpits, pulled me up over the door bars and then let go of me, and I fell to the ground,” he said. “There’s pictures of me laying on the ground next to the car.
To be homologated for a top-tier series, a car and all its additional safety equipment—plus the driver’s suits, helmet, and, yes, underwear—must meet strict FIA requirements. The idea is to provide strength in a crash and ease of exit. Those speedy exits are really just for when a driver needs to get out ASAP in a fire. But in some bad crashes, it’s often wise to take things slowly.
“I did it for the FIA, when we were in Portugal. I was the dummy for the safety crew,” says Glickenhaus Hypercar driver Ryan Briscoe. “We did an extraction test in case I was unconscious in the car. And so I had the medical crew—I think it was the WEC medical crew—and they put me in a harness and then pulled me out of the car, and I basically played dead. And they put me on the stretcher. They needed to practice too.”Robert Wickens is back behind the wheel.
