‘America is not past its prime – our politicians are past theirs,’ says the 51-year-old former UN ambassadoronce rudely dismissed as a “bird brain”, has emerged as the strongest challenger to stop him securing the Republican presidential nomination.
Yet she pressed on, and sought to build support not only in Iowa, but also in New Hampshire, calculating if Trump was to be stopped, he needed to be wounded in both of those races.She has also been helped by errors made by DeSantis, not least his decision to sign into law a six-week abortion law in Florida, something not even Mr Trump supports.
If Haley is the Republican nominee, she would make history as both the first woman and the first person of colour. She also used it quite effectively during one of the debates, when some of the other hopefuls engaged in a lengthy back-and-forth. She has rarely attacked Trump directly, and instead said it is time for a new generation of leaders. Her time at the United Nations also solidified her foreign policy credentials at a time when the horrors in Gaza and Israel, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, point to the need for an experienced hand.
Haley’s only hope is she can cement her position as the only true alternative, and wish other low-polling candidates follow the example of Mike Pence and drop out.
