Executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks joined forces again to tell the tale of America's military activities around the Pacific Ocean including famous battles on Iwo Jima and Peleliu.
With The Pacific, HBO had a worthy companion piece to Band of Brothers. The 2001 docu-series follows Richard Winters and Easy Company from their first moments in the military until the war's end, focusing on some of the most famous aspects of World War II. The Pacific spends its time with Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations over the same time, but the realistic details and massive battleground set-pieces produced an exorbitant cost.
According to interviews given to The Hollywood Reporter after the series aired, the directors wanted as much realism in the shoot as they could possibly get. This led to more than 3,000 actors and extras receiving hand-made herringbone twill costumes woven in India and more than 50,000 rounds of fake ammunition being produced that replicated bullets from the time period.
After the success of that show in 2001, HBO was willing to push the envelope further with The Pacific to create the kind of buzz and attention that Band of Brothers had in 2001. HBO was confident that Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg would be able to deliver another masterpiece, and they were proven right. The Pacific won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2010 for Most Outstanding Miniseries.
