McKinney corporations use taxpayer dollars to fund projects focusing on bringing in new business, supporting quality of life.

of 1979 gave cities “the ability to finance new and expanded business enterprises in their local communities through economic development corporations .” The Local Government Code authorizes cities to adopt a sales tax to fund the corporations and defines the projects EDCs are allowed to undertake. The corporations can be dissolved, but only by a vote of the city residents.

“The recruitment, retention and expansion of companies to and in McKinney creates quality job opportunities in the local community and generates new corporate tax revenue to the city, which aids in offsetting the property tax burden on residents,” said Tokar. Another $7,147,746 was awarded toward community gathering space/ facility — of which $7 million went to the City Hall Plaza project, which will create afor the community to hang out and get involved with decisions being made for their city.

“The thing that was attractive about TUPPS for the MCDC was that it is creating an entertainment space on the East Side,” Schneible said. “We’re looking at ways to catalyze development on the East Side, and it is creating not only a manufacturing facility for the actual brewery, but a whole outdoor entertainment space that can serve as a community gathering space.
