They screen applicants based on responses to online forms and check their references. Then Onypko interviews the candidates. The process is meant to insure that the applicants are members of the L.G.B.T.Q. community and will be able to fit in at the shelter. The rejection rate is about ten per cent. Then there were the three Russians, from Russia, who asked for help, perhaps because they feel that, even now, L.G.B.T.Q. people are safer in Ukraine than in Russia.
