The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin historic confirmation hearings for Jackson, the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court.

Jackson was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit last year, but prior to that, she spent eight years as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia after being nominated by former President. Sotomayor is the only sitting justice who also served as a judge in the trial or district courts.

She worked from 2005 to 2007 as an assistant public defender in Washington, D.C., which saw her represent low-income defendants in criminal cases and detainees held at Guantánamo Bay.
