The new season, titled “The Morphine Murderess,” discusses the case of Annie Crawford, a woman charged with poisoning family members in the early 1900s.
It’s the early 1900s in New Orleans. Jazz music fills the streets, absinthe is plentiful, and drugs like cocaine and morphine are commonly found in basic, over-the-counter medications — even for children.
An image of Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana circa 1910, around the time of the murders documented in the eighth season of the “Tenfold More Wicked” podcast dubbed “The Morphine Murderess.” Documentary producer, crime historian and podcast creator and host Kate Winkler Dawson explores a true crime story, set in New Orleans in the early 1900s, of a quiet woman who is suddenly considered a murder suspect in the eighth season of the “Tenfold More Wicked” podcast dubbed “The Morphine Murderess.” The first episode dropped on Monday, March 20 on the Exactly Right Media podcast network.
Statistically, women are more apt to use poison for murder than men, she said, noting how readily available a variety of substances were in the late 1800s and early 1900s, coupled with the fact that, for the most part, small amounts were undetectable. “I’m working on a case for a future episode of ‘Tenfold’ where they’re looking at the blackening of the face to see if this is someone who died of arsenic poisoning or cyanide,” she said. “So there really was a time when it was easy to get away with poisoning someone and women found an easy way to get rid of abusive husbands or unwanted family members or, frankly, people who just pissed them off.”
“My sound designer, producer and I are constantly debating, ‘Does this sound like the Mississippi River or does it sound more like a lake? Are we walking through gravel or are we walking through leaves?’ Those things are important because we have very smart listeners and they pick up on inauthenticity so we have to stay authentic.”True crime storytelling is a booming business.
