Bryce Griggs and Tyler Smith were high school stars in Houston, but they opted to move to...
Former Hightower High School star Bryce Griggs is in his second season at Overtime Elite, a professional basketball league for players ages 16-20.If Bryce Griggs took a customary route, he’d be trying to make his mark as a freshman at one of the country’s premier college basketball programs. Maybe he’d be inside the Fertitta Center getting an earful from Kelvin Sampson about the importance of grabbing every loose ball.
In addition to the financial windfall, the players take advantage of a sparkling new 103,000-square foot campus that includes state-of-the-art gyms and equipment as well as classrooms. They also receive instruction from coaches like former NBA veteran and UConn national championship-winning coach Kevin Ollie, who serves as OTE's director of player development, as well as a host of other former NBA players who are on campus for on-the-court- training and off-the-court mentoring.
Those workouts are followed by time in the weight room, followed by another on-court session, then meetings. After time for dinner, Griggs, who was such a big high school star that his games frequently were played inside sold-out gyms and attended by the city's pro athletes like James Harden and Deshaun Watson, usually returns to the gym to keep working. He estimates he spends at least seven hours a day on the court, not including time in the weight room and film study.
“I just know I’m getting a lot more work in here than most high schoolers,” said the 6-foot-10 Smith, who is up to 220 pounds, about 25 pounds bigger than he was when he left Houston a little more than a year ago. “They’re in school for like eight hours, while I’m able to get my classwork done quicker and get back to improving my game on the court.”
