'The antidote to addiction is connection and love.'
Wicks, who's been hosting daily fitness classes for kids during the Coronavirus pandemic, made a tearful appearance on the cult radio show, sharing with host Lauren Laverne that watching his dad struggle with a heroin addiction in his youth was the reason he turned to an altogether healthier lifestyle.'I was scared of it and I got into exercise and fitness and so his mistake changed my life,' he told the programme.
'I felt instantly bad,' he admits, 'I remember just thinking what a horrible thing to say about your dad.’Wicks now has more empathy towards his parents, after struggling with feelings of anger as a teenager, living in a council estate in Epsom, Surrey. There came a point when he realised that instead of pushing him away, the thing his dad needed the most, was for him to tell him he loved him.
'Unconditional love is so important for people with addiction,' he notes, telling Laverne that although he's kept his feelings about his childhood a secret until now, that he's 'found peace,' with the situation. 'I just don't regret anything I've gone through or anything I have been through with my mum and dad, I'm just proud of who I am,' he added. Admitting that seeing the impact drugs had on his family meant he was never tempted to try them himself, instead choosing to seek out connection and love, as an 'antidote to addiction.'
