ICYMI: How Emeka Egbuka became Ohio State football's versatile pass catcher
“He talks about that a lot,” said his mother, Rhonda Ogilvie. “The tracking of the baseball really helps him in football. All that repetition.”The versatility of Egbuka has kept one of the nation’s highest-scoring offenses humming even as it has remainedEgbuka has replaced Smith-Njigba as the Buckeyes’ starting slot receiver and lined up outside in other personnel groupings.
Egbuka still remembers the excitement of the moment from March 2018 when he left a health class for a phone call with David Kelly, then the Seminoles’ wide receivers coach. The offer left him so elated that he sought out seemingly everyone at the school to share the news rather than return to his class.
“He just killed it down there,” Ogilvie said, “and that was really the kicking off point for his exposure.” Egbuka maintained a similar shrewdness in his recruitment. As he looked at dozens of schools before ultimately picking Ohio State over Oklahoma and Washington, he took a scientific approach. Henry remembers his son using pen and paper to keep track of all the medieval castles they spotted along the Rhine River.
