E-bikes are too hot, literally. With a rise in exploding batteries, here's how startups are stepping in to keep deliveries safe.

The conundrum creates opportunities for companies looking to bring safer, more affordable e-bikes and batteries to the market. A crop of new startups is tackling the problem in a variety of ways, from engineering safer batteries to setting up bike-sharing cohorts to taking control of storage and maintenance.

Advancements in lithium-ion technology mean that battery cells can store more energy than ever. That's great for not running out of juice on a long ride, but it means an e-bike's battery pack can contain a huge amount of energy that's dangerous if unleashed in an uncontrolled way, experts said. Government leaders are taking note. Amid a spate of fires, New York City in March passed laws restricting the sale of refurbished battery packs and banning the sale of new e-bikes that aren't certified by UL Solutions, which develops safety standards.
