His ERA isn’t pretty, but there is so much more to his game that has shown up early this season that was lacking last year. Despite his showing poise and mound presence from the get-go last summer, looking at Wicks’ peripherals last year should have given people pause. Rarely is a 16.3 percent strikeout rate enough to thrive in this league.
This year, he’s using his changeup and sinker around 18.4 percent of the time, and his four-seam usage has jumped to 48.1 percent. It’s early, and these numbers will fluctuate, but how Wicks is using his arsenal and where he’s attacking hitters has changed.
