Opinion: How California Democrat Ken Cooley helped boost a Proud Boy
Democrats’ strategy a few months back to meddle in Republican primaries to push through the weakest Republican opponent might inadvertently elect a Proud Boy to a Sacramento Area school board.
While it might work in some instances, you needn’t look very far to find the limits of this strategy. In 2016, Democrats focused on then-candidate Trump believing he would be the easiest to beat — which obviously backfired. When asked about this pick-your-opponent strategy and its mixed results, DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney said on MSNBC: “You might see us do that, sure.”
Cooley, a Rancho Cordova Democrat, was trying to fend off a challenge from Josh Hoover, a much more formidable Republican challenger. But the strategy did not work – despite Cooley’s best efforts, Perrine finished a distant fourth place, with just over five percent of the vote.
