Co-creator Bryan Konietzko explains how much of Avatar: The Last Airbender was actually inspired by one very important Studio Ghibli rule.
The designs of Avatar: The Last Airbender were secretly inspired by the legendary Studio Ghibli. Having originally released in 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the story of Avatar Aang and his companions, as they desperately work to take down the genocidal Firelord Ozai. Famed for its complex moral questions, thought-provoking world-building, and stunning settings, Avatar: The Last Airbender has become a cultural phenomenon.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Studio Ghibli inspiration featured heavily in the show's development, as old Avatar: The Last Airbender concept art shows hints of that style. Yet it was the backgrounds of the franchise that really borrowed from Ghibli. Check out Konietzko's quote below: The younger members of the cast of Netflix's version include Gordon Cormier , Dallas Liu , Kiawentiio Tarbel , Ian Ousley , Elizabeth Yu , and Maria Zhang . Other friendly faces will include Paul Sun-Hyung Lee , Casey Camp-Horinek , Lim Kay Siu , and Yvonne Chapman . Meanwhile, the main antagonists will be Daniel Dae Kim and Ken Leung .
