Hartland House in Cumbria is the first residential care facility in the UK to install Nobi lamps to help detect and prevent falls - the results have been extraordinary
In March, the 31-room home became the first residential care facility in the UK to install the lamps thanks to the scheme, funded by Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board .
The Nobi smart lamp replaces existing ceiling fixtures. Each lamp has four cameras, but is not a CCTV recording device. It takes an image every second and the AI creates a blank canvas and replaces the person with a stick figure, maintaining residents’ privacy. “We are answering a fall in two minutes, on average, compared to two hours as that’s when we do our checks. It is a completely different scenario and undoubtedly makes us more efficient,” says Ms Scrogham.
“Another lady who regularly fell and we didn’t know why was dropping her tissues, so you can see on the image sent through from the lamp that she is picking something up. Now we can report the lead up a fall, the actual event, and what we’ve done about it.” “And if they do need hospital treatment, you van guarantee they [the elderly person] are not the same person when they return,” Leanne says. “They lose their confidence the longer they stay in hospital.”
Helen Whiteley, right, daughter of Hartland House resident Sylvia, says the lamp has given her peace of mind that staff can reach Sylvia within two minutes if she ever has a fall Roeland Pelgrims, the Belgian CEO at Nobi, credits the UK’s “extremely welcoming” attitude to innovation and technology. “The average time it takes a staff member to get to a resident in all the homes [in different countries] that have Nobi lamps is over three minutes,” he says. “At Hartland House they make it it in two minutes so they are kind of the Usain Bolt of caregivers.
“I think it’s the most important piece of equipment invented over the last 30 years. Before, Pat could have been on the floor for an hour and half before help arrives.
