). When she’s not training or competing, Jackson runs the marketing department of her family’s company, Jackson Kayaks, the largest whitewater manufacturing business. Oh, and she has two small children, six and two, one of whom she homeschools.
Right after the Mountain Games, Jackson says she and her kids will be driving all the way to Ottawa, Canada, where they’ll leave their RV and dogs with her in-laws before flying to Spain for World Championships. “I’m hoping we can do the drive pretty quickly, which you never know with kids. I may not have the time to pack properly.” Her husband, she says, has another competition in Colorado this week, so he’ll be meeting them in Spain.
“If you have it in you to go 100 percent with things, that’s awesome, but a lot of people I find that go 100 percent into [a sport], they lose a lot of fun or respect or love for it,” she says. “As much as you love it, it hurts you at times. You take it personally when you don’t do well—you’re like, ‘Wait a minute, this is who I am.’ ” Jackson has been kayaking for years, and that was always who she was—and then she got married and had kids. She started working at Jackson Kayak.
Throughout our interview Jackson also casually mentions that she recently competed in a bass fishing tournament, and also that she and her husband own a coffee company. Oh, and she’s training for a 50-mile running race . So how does she stay centered? How does she relax and decompress if/when she even has time for it? Jackson says she cross-stitches sometimes, she reads magazines, and whenever she can, she takes a bath. “When I’m home, which is so rare, the bath is definitely my favorite spot.
The sort of content she does believe we could stand to share more of? The kind that’s super relatable. “That’s a really important part of my image,” Jackson says. It’s not common to be able to walk up to a pro athlete, chat with them, and feel like you could be friends. But Jackson hopes that the people she interacts with—especially young girls who may be interested in kayaking—feel this way about her, “because I think that makes the sport more relatable too.
