Ever since George Floyd’s murder in police custody kickstarted nationwide anti-racism protests in 2020, the art world has been reexaming artists of color and their work. Barnes in particular painted his experience of the Black community. “The Sugar Shack,” a dancing scene, was based on one of Barnes’ childhood memories and is meant to “show that African-Americans utilize rhythm as a way of resolving physical tension,” the artist said.
