The two local authorities responsible for maintaining East Lancashire highways have given details of how they will spend £4.723million of new government money on resurfacing roads, filling potholes and other improvements.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has been given £612,0000 the Department for Transport’s Network North Plan financed from the reallocation of cash from the cancellation of the HS2 rail line. Lancashire County Council – which covers 12 boroughs including Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale – has an extra £3.661m to spend. Blackburn with Darwen Council’s growth boss Cllr Quesir Mahmood said: “Extra money from the government for highways maintenance is always welcome.“It will be used to improve the roads infrastructure throughout the borough Schemes to use it are currently being developed.

The proposed LCC projects to tackle deteriorating road surfaces include two in Hyndburn, one in Ribble Valley, one in Pendle, five in Rossendale and none in Burnley. A county council spokesman said: “These are small schemes determined on a countywide prioritisation based on condition, the number of defects, repeat visits to defects, claims and complaints received, along with the route strategic significance.

There is a drainage scheme for roads in each of the five boroughs.* Long Lane, Pleasington, surface dressing £120,000;* Rivington Road, Belmont, surface dressing £162,000;* Kelsall Avenue, Blackburn, resurfacing £47,000;* Mill Hill and Moorgate area, footway patching £64,000;* Shear Brow and Corporation Park area, footway patching £31,000.* Fern Gore Avenue, Accrington west and Oswaldtwistle, Willows Lane to High Street, resurfacing; andRIBBLE VALLEYNone.
