Violent crime reports continued to drop from the high points of the early pandemic, but were still above 2019 levels, according to a new police report.
In a report delivered to the Houston City Council, Finner said thatin 2022 and the murder rate dropped by 9 percent citywide, compared to 2021. Houston Police Department recorded 435 murders in 2022, after recording 477 in 2021. The number is sill higher than the 291 murders reported in 2019, before the spike in crime that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overall, there were 26,454 violent crimes reported in Houston last year, a definition that includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and human trafficking, according to the report. There were 28,862 violent crimes reported in 2021.that was created early in 2022, when the city's murder rate was trending up.
District H Councilmember Karla Cisneros said she was still concerned about the 179 percent increase in kidnapping cases in her district on the city's north side and asked the police department to provide more details to her in a future report.
