Eversmeyer moved to Houston in the 1950s after meeting her first partner, Tommie Russum, at a softball game in the city. After Russum died of cancer in 1985, Eversmeyer embarked on a road trip through California visiting senior LGBT groups. She founded Lesbians Over the Age of 50 in 1987 with the aim of ensuring lesbians could continue to lead active socials lives as they aged.
With a membership of about 150 people, LOAF continues to provide a vital source of friendship and community for older lesbians, a population that has historically struggled with isolation, according to Eversmeyer's obituary.
