Showrunner Ryan Condal addresses the perceived viewership battle between his show, House of the Dragon, and Prime Video's fantasy epic, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Acting as a prequel to HBO's wildly successful Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles the onset of the Targaryen civil war almost 200 years earlier. The show has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, boasting strong writing, performances, and some surprising narrative twists and turns.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Based on the beloved fantasy novels by author J.R.R Tolkien, The Rings of Power is also a prequel of sorts, taking place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings as evil rises during Middle-earth's Second Age. Although featuring little in common other than their genre, The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon have been pitted against each other since before either show had even premiered.
“I read Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and The Hobbit multiple times growing up, I saw the Peter Jackson movies multiple times in the theaters. I love all that stuff, I love high fantasy, and frankly I want to live in a world where there’s room for all of these things to exist if they’re good. I think the need for more well-made expensive science-fiction/fantasy on television is what all of us nerds want.
How House Of The Dragon & The Rings Of Power Are Different Although both The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon operate firmly within the fantasy genre and feature mythical creatures, sword fights, and sweeping natural landscapes, those are essentially where the similarities end. Like Tolkien's source material, The Rings of Power is an all-ages affair, telling of the brave feats of ordinary folk, epic quests, and the power of hope when darkness reigns.
As Condal suggests, there's likely a great deal of viewership overlap between the two shows. Both House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power offer up something different for fans, and both excel at different aspects of fantasy storytelling. While the rise of streaming has made comparing accurate viewership numbers quite difficult anyway, it's clear that Condal believes that it doesn't matter whether House of the Dragon or The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power comes out on top.
