A Washington, D.C.-based restaurant company is planning to open House of Creole in downtown Cleveland in February.

The company is led by chef Jeffeary Miskiri, who worked a variety of restaurant jobs growing up in the D.C. area. He learned about the heritage, culture and style of Louisiana’s Creole and Cajun cuisine from his great-grandfather in New Orleans. Ten years ago, Miskiri put together a team including his wife, Toya Miskiri, and two years later opened Po Boy Jim in Washington. They have expanded with several restaurants and more planned in the Washington-Maryland area, Smith said.

“Creole dishes really take up the New Orleans concept,” Smith said. “You’ve got shrimp and grits, you’ve got the gumbo. You’ve got your beignets, shrimp baskets. I know you all have your Polish Boy, but we have the po boy sandwich with catfish and shrimp.” Often, Smith said, “people and businesses want to go to the major cities – Houston, Miami, Atlanta, New York, L.A. But we looked at the location in Cleveland – it’s downtown. We looked at the culture in Cleveland. We also wanted to do something different - don’t go to where everyone goes, start something different in a new city. And not only do that but get back and stimulate the economy.”
