LOS ANGELES ― When rosters for the World Baseball Classic are announced Thursday, pay attention to the least recognizable names on the United States roster., the Phillies’ Bryce Harper and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts comprise the U.S. outfield alone – have commanded the early headlines. But of all the differences between the first WBC in 2006, and the fifth, which begins March 8, a couple stand out. And it starts with the 30th guy on each team.
If there is a Christian Laettner to be found among this Dream Team, his name will be revealed Thursday. That’s a big “if.” The buzz around this year’s tournament is without precedent. Beyond Jake Peavy and Dontrelle Willis, who were at their peak, the U.S. rotation consisted of a 43-year-old Roger Clemens and a 40-year-old Al Leiter, who had effectively retired from MLB. Clemens was the losing pitcher when the U.S. was eliminated from the 2006 WBC, a 2-1 loss to Mexico. Willis lost another second-round game to South Korea, allowing a critical home run to Hee-Seop Choi at Angel Stadium.
The effect was similar every time the WBC reprised. Non-U.S. teams seemed to find key contributions from the Adam Sterns and Hee-Seop Chois of the world, for whom a big WBC game might represent their version of playing in the World Series.
