Our Senior Moments columnist Patricia Bunin reflects on the poetry of a nurse’s compassion.
Christine was just being herself, an intensive care nurse; it’s a job she was obviously born to fill, a job she handled with effortless grace.
I’d accompanied my daughter to Rancho Springs Medical Center after she got the call that her father Dennis was suffering from heart failure, and I spent the few days there with her. “You know, these are just Band-Aids,” she said, taking my daughter’s hand and pointing to the machines that were keeping her dad alive. “We can’t fix what’s wrong, but I promise you we will do everything possible to keep him peaceful and pain-free.”
Her poetic tone had now changed to free verse, each word punctuated by pain and rescued by comfort. Christine was deeply devoted to keeping her patient from suffering. Late into the night, she listened to and encouraged our stories. She gently dabbed Sara’s cheeks with tissues and told her loving stories that her dad had related about her.
