Hong Kong authorities have accelerated the legislative process to pass Article 23, the city’s own national security law. The law covers the offences of treason, insurrection, espionage, sabotaging national security, theft of state secrets and external interference.
Maximum penalties for some of them include life imprisonment. Article 23 is meant to complement the Beijing-imposed National Security Law, which only covers four offences.
