The spread of a parasite-carrying flatworm has led to a rise in cases of schistosomiasis, a tropical disease, in southern Europe, researchers have warned
Holidaymakers are being warned about the increasing risk of catching a tropical disease called schistosomiasis in southern Europe. Researchers at KU Leuven University say there's been a rise in cases due to the spread of a parasite-carrying flatworm.
The study suggests that the problem is likely to get worse with climate change, which is making it easier for the freshwater snails that carry the parasite to survive in many parts of southern Europe.Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is the second most common parasitic disease after malaria, causing more than 200 million infections worldwide every year. The disease can be caught by swimming in contaminated freshwater, such as rivers, lakes and ponds.
Biologists from KU Leuven, along with experts from the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the University of Copenhagen, looked at the temperature ranges that these disease-carrying freshwater snails can tolerate. Meanwhile, schistosomiasis has been present on the French island of Corsica since 2013 and was also recently found in the Spanish city of Almeria. An increasing number of tropical infectious diseases are being introduced to Europe as a result of climate change.
