Lancashire's Senior Coroner Dr James Adeley has criticised the Egyptian authorities and doctors

A couple from Lancashire who died within hours of each other after being poisoned on a family holiday in Egypt received "utterly insufficient" medical care, a coroner has ruled.

Dr Adeley returned a narrative conclusion in which he said: "John James Cooper and Susan Elaine Cooper died on 21 August 2018 whilst on holiday in Hurghada, Egypt. Their deaths were caused by the spraying of a pesticide containing dichloromethane in an adjoining room and inhaling the vapour resulting in their deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning."

Having heard the evidence Dr Adeley considered several issues which he outlined in his summing-up. Here we take a look at the key issues. Mr and Mrs Cooper's daughter found the couple 'seriously unwell' on August 21 "Kelly Ormerod had not received a reply from her parents to a message and so knocked on the door of their room at approximately 10:30am. John Cooper answered the door and appeared disorientated and unusually for him, avoided eye contact. John Cooper walked back into the room and appeared not to be able to walk in a straight line and, in Kelly Ormerod's words, 'slumped onto the bed'.

"Although I have no knowledge as to what 'gross professional negligence' means when used in either an official Egyptian report or possibly under Egyptian law, I would consider the resuscitation of John Cooper as lacking in assessment and escalation of appropriate treatment. In respect of the treatment provided to Susan Cooper over a period of approximately five hours, during which time she deteriorated and only minimal treatment steps were taken, as utterly insufficient.

"Consequently, I am unable to consider the rider of neglect, but it is only on the basis of whether or not treatment would have prevented Susan Cooper's death. However, this should not detract from my view that the treatment provided to Susan Cooper was extremely lacking."
