Karen Warren Coleman has led the school since 2017, overseeing the Dallas campus through the coronavirus pandemic and several shifts in tradition.

“The past five years at Hockaday have been a period of transformative change,” she wrote Monday in a message to families. “We have made significant progress toward all the important goals we set as a community.”“My career,” she said, “has been focused on student success for all. This feels like the right time to explore how I might have a different kind of impact in these areas I care so deeply about.

Coleman noted that she was proud to oversee an increase in overall applications, as well as growth among the number of students of color enrolled at the school. Hockaday also developed a new strategic plan during her tenure, which included a focus on diversity and inclusion. Nicole Small, chairwoman of the board of trustees, thanked Coleman for her leadership in a separate message to families. She said Coleman laid out an “ambitious” plan for the school, focused on advancing academics, financial sustainability along with equity.

“Dr. Coleman’s steady guidance and deep engagement with our community during the COVID pandemic, in conjunction with the outstanding group of school and medical experts she convened, kept our community safe while allowing us to continue living out our mission at the highest level,” she wrote. In addition to navigating COVID-19, Coleman also led Hockaday as it updated its traditional graduation attire and began to phase out its boarding program.
