The Lodge, at Tallentire Hall, near Cockermouth, needs some TLC
A leaking roof of a historic building could be repaired provided the project gets planning permission. Peter Herring has applied to Cumberland Council for listed building consent to carry out the repairs at The Lodge, at Tallentire Hall, near Cockermouth.
It would involve the replacement of ridge tiles with slate coloured clay cap tiles, plastic gutters with metal cast iron heritage gutters and replace the plastic downspouts and hoppers with replacements made from cast metal. In the planning application Mr Herring said the condition of the existing ridge tiles had declined so much that they were now “porous”, and the heritage guttering would be a more sympathetic style to the building.
According to a design and access statement the proposed development is appropriate to the site and its setting because it will restore the former style of ridge tiles to the building and provide superior protection and ventilation to the roof going forward.The report adds: “This should help maintain the building and prevent further rot and damage to an already seriously compromised and heavily repaired roof structure.
“It can be adequately accessed by prospective users as neither of the proposed changes will affect the access arrangements to the property. The building is already fully scaffolded and so it would seem sensible to utilise this to complete the proposed works so that the challenging areas to access can be worked on to a high standard more easily.”
The application is under consultation and will be considered by council planning officers and should be decided by December 11.
