The first edition of “Texas Familia Magazine” launched at the end of the Spring 2022 semester. Its theme is family and wellness. 'Unapologetic' is the word used to often to explain how stories in the Hispanic and Latinx-inspired magazine should be.
AUSTIN, Texas — Ronald Hernandez and Alexia Villareal sit side by side on a paint chipped picnic bench with their laptops open. The smell of East Austin tacos fills the air, accompanied by the sound of midday traffic on East Cesar Chavez street.
“I want this platform to be a place where they [students] feel comfortable sharing their experiences and telling them how they want,” Hernandez said. “We’re very proud of what we accomplished, but I think we can do more in the future,” Hernandez said. What became the first publication of its kind at UT Austin started as an idea to unite Hispanic and Latinx students early in the covid pandemic. The magazine’s founder, Austin Martinez, also believes in the importance of access to reading and knowledge. Martinez approached Hernandez about creating the magazine from scratch.
