Former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said former President Donald Trump uses the psychological technique of"projection" to deflect from alleged malfeasance.
Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, shared her impressions of the 45th president in relation to his indictment on four federal charges with MSNBC weekend host Jen Psaki in an interview that is set to air on Sunday.In the short clip shared by Psaki in advance of the full episode, Psaki asks Clinton whether or not she believed Trump when he said that he's not likely to pardon himself if found guilty while in office.
Psychology Today describes projection as the process of displacing negative feelings of oneself onto other people as an avoidance or defense mechanism. "Unconscious discomfort can lead people to attribute unacceptable feelings or impulses to someone else to avoid confronting them," says Psychology Today."Projection allows the difficult trait to be addressed without the individual fully recognizing it in themselves."
"So whenever he accuses somebody of doing something, it’s almost guaranteed he’s doing it himself, or he’s already done it," said Clinton."Or whenever he denies thinking about doing something — or doing it — it’s almost guaranteed he is thinking about it, or has already done it."Despite the charges against the former president, Trump is still the clear front-runner for the GOP nomination.
