Hilary turns into a hurricane, gaining great power as it continues tracking toward Southern California

The NWS says the system could produce 5 to 7 inches of rain in the San Diego County mountains and deserts Saturday through Monday

Tropical Storm Hilary became a hurricane off Mexico early Thursday and is gaining tremendous strength as it continues moving toward Southern California, where it could deliver heavy rain this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

On Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center released a map showing Hilary tracking unusually far north, possibly on a path that could take the system directly into San Diego County. Updated maps released Thursday still show the system keying on Southern California. The two storms originated along the west coast of Mexico, below Baja California, where the water gets warm enough to sustain such activity. The systems rarely travel very far up the the Baja California peninsula, where the water is significantly cooler, partly due to the presence of the chilly California Current.
