The hiker swam back out of the river once before jumping in again and getting swept downstream.
A hiker died Sunday after he was swept down a river near a trail on Mt. Baldy, authorities said.
Two hikers were walking on a trail along Barrett-Stoddard Road around 5:40 p.m. when one of them decided to jump off a cliff into a nearby river, according to Lt. Bill Fillpot of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station. The hiker swam back out of the river before jumping in again and getting swept downstream.
The victim’s friend began searching along the river, which was about 15 feet deep, and found the man swept back onto land, Fillpot said. How far down the river the victim had been carried was not clear. The friend performed CPR on the victim until U.S. Forest Service crews arrived to take over. The victim, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
