High winds prompt Mountain Empire to cancel classes [Breaking]
until 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The strongest winds were predicted to occur between 8 a.m. and noon Wednesday.
The Mountain Empire district serves more than 4,000 students and encompasses over 660 square miles in the southeastern area of the county, including some mountainous terrain. It relies heavily on buses to get students to its four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The district also operates an alternative education program.
