About 60% of people from South Asian backgrounds carry a gene that puts them at higher risk.

University of Oxford scientists have uncovered a gene that doubles the risk of lung failure and death from Covid.

Building on previous genetic work, researchers used a combination of artificial intelligence and new molecular technology to pinpoint the exact gene - called LZTF1 - responsible for the increased risks. But he said a complex mix of factors - including age in particular - contributed to each person's individual risk.He added "Socio-economic factors were also likely to be important in explaining why some communities have been particularly badly affected by the pandemic.
